Counselor’s Services
At the heart of the counseling services provided by a career and technical counselor is the welfare and development of all career and technical students. Research by Greg Brigman and Chari Campbell (2003) demonstrates that school counseling interventions focused on the development of cognitive, social, and self-management skills can result in gains in students’ academic achievement.
The work responsibilities of a career and technical counselor will impact students directly by targeting training curricula. Indirect involvement includes the considerable efforts by the counselor to provide enhanced experiential opportunities to fine-tune workplace skills through collaborations and partnerships with local businesses and business leaders. The career and technical counselor will collaborate with instructors, academic counselors, student services coordinators, and other professional staff to provide a seamless integration of academic, career and technical, and personal skills resources. The counselor will work closely with the teachers who handle special needs and with the academic counselors to maximize students’ academic achievements.
The counselor will provide meaningful feedback to teaching staff and students by interpreting test data. This data-driven information allows teaching staff to direct students and provides students and teachers with quantifiable information on progress, interests, abilities, and future career and educational goals. Additionally, the career and technical counselor will consult parents to assure high quality experiences in students’ career and technical programs.
The counselor will document the progress and remediation needs of students and will facilitate any necessary intervention strategies. He/she will keep detailed records of students’ performances through surveys, appraisals, evaluations, and inventories. Additionally, he/she will keep on file the mandated state testing scores. The career and technical counselor will use program objectives to blend academic and career and technical efforts for program completion and retention. The counselor will assist the career and technical director to coordinate program information data for the Office of Technical and Vocational Education (OVTE) with the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). The areas served include counseling, consulting and coordinating, and appraisal.
